Mid-Lent Service - Tue., March 22nd @ 6:30pm

This is the day we erect the Golgotha in the middle of the church. There are several significances to the erection of Golgotha.
The Bible Reading says: "And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life." John 3: 14-15. Jesus predicted his eventual crucifixion to his disciples in this verse.
Moses lifted up the bronze serpent in the middle of the desert (wilderness) around the middle of the Exodus, the journey of the Israelites from slavery to their promised land. He lifted up the serpent so that those who are bitten by the snake might look at it and have life. Similarly the cross (Jesus) is lifted up in the middle of the church so that we are reminded that those who are bitten by sin can look at Jesus and gain eternal life by the Him.
The Golgotha and erection of cross in the middle of the church also signifies that God came down from heaven and dwelt among us in this world. This is why the Golgotha is in the middle of the church with us, the common folks, and not in the Madbaha as we normally expect to find it. It is going to be in the middle of the church till Good Friday (representing the Public Ministry of Jesus) when it will be taken to Calvary and then buried. On Easter, Jesus will rise from the dead and then the cross will be placed in the Madbaha for another 40 days till the Feast of Ascension. Between the Easter and Ascension, Jesus only revealed to selected people (no public ministry as earlier), so the veiled cross will be seen only in the Madbaha during this time.

Holy Qurbana to end Shunoyo Fast - Sat., August 15th @ 9am
A Holy Qurbana is scheduled for Saturday, August 15th at 9am to end the Shunoyo Fast (Assumption of St. Mary). Please plan to attend with your family.
The Theotokos had now reached an advanced age. Her fervent and unceasing desire was to leave the body and be with her beloved Son and God. The Mother of God did not fear death, nor did she seek to avoid it. She knew that death had already been overcome by her Son and God. At that time she still lived in the house of John the Evangelist on Mount Sion. She often went from there to the Mount of Olives to offer fervent prayers. As she was thus praying on the Mount of Olives that the Lord quickly take her to heaven, there appeared before her the archangel Gabriel and disclosed to the Theotokos the following: “Thus says your Son: The days are approaching when I will take My Mother unto Me”. Thus the Virgin heard those much longed for words which she received with gladness.

First Holy Qurbana at San Diego Chapel - Sat., July 27th
A handful of families from our Church, who live in San Diego, have taken the initiative to form the San Diego Congregation as an extension of the St. Thomas Orthodox Church, Los Angeles. They plan to host a Holy Qurbana service in San Diego the fourth Saturday of each month.
The first Holy Qurbana will be celebrated by Rev. Fr. Panicker at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 27th, at Grace Chapel located at 9050 Mira Mesa Boulevard, San Diego, CA 92126.
This Chapel is easy to get to, because Mira Mesa Boulevard is an exit from 15 and 805 freeways. It can conveniently accommodate up to 80 people and has a large parking lot.
We invite you to show your support by attending this joyous event.
If you plan to attend this Holy Qurbana, could you please send Dr. Kandathil Jacob an e-mail at kjacob@earthlink.net and let him know how many adults and kids will be there in your party. This would help the San Diego Congregation ensure a pleasant experience for you.
